Food is My Enemy

Plate of salad including lettuce tomatoes blueberries apples ham
Today is number 12 of my 30-day poetry-writing spree and things are still going well. Except for the fact that I’ve been posting my works later than I would like to, not a day has gone by without my posting a verse to this blog.

I often take pictures of food when sitting down to eat. Matters not where dinner takes place—at home, at someone else’s place, a restaurant or wherever, my trusty little camera or cell phone points and snaps at dishes for the fun of it. Good thing my subconscious must have known I would need dishes for this posting some day.

So without further ado… I give you the poem…

Food is My Enemy

Fish and vegetables on a white dish
Food is my enemy.

I do not understand.

No matter what portion I eat

I’m stuck at its command.

Delicious cheesecake prompts my hands to

Put more in my mouth.

Cheese potatoes taste so good I

Inside of cake layered with red, green, and yellow cakes and white frostingNeed an extra ounce.

Turkey drumsticks—chicken too

Make me feel good when I’m blue.

I just don’t know what to do.

Everywhere I go, there’s food.

Some say, “Chomp a-plenty

You’re too skinny—eat—enjoy.”

Pizookie Oatmeal Raisin cookie with icecream and two spoonsOther’s say, “Don’t take all that

Put some back—you’re getting fat.”

What direction should I take?

At each turn, I see fruitcake;

Fountains of punch overflowed,

Appetizers dressed with toad.

Plate of ribs and french fries
Pancakes,

Hotcakes,

Flapjacks,

What?

Cut them with a fork—

Add nuts

On top of maple syrup.

Drink tea in a fancy cup.

White cake covered with coconut over the frosting
Food is my enemy.

Still I need it to grow.

Perhaps it will not puff me up if

I eat it very slow.

I hope you enjoyed this silly poem about finding oneself surrounded by food. Of course it was filled with hyperbole but that made it fun to write.

You can leave a poem of your own, especially one about food, in the comments section below. Plus, don't forget you can help a kid leave a poem for me and others to read in the comments section as well...

Thanks for visiting!
